Complete PC Troubleshooting Guide
Quick steps to diagnose and fix common computer problems without needing tech support.
1. Start with a Restart
This sounds simple, but a restart clears memory, resets services, and often resolves minor bugs.
2. Identify the Symptom
What exactly is happening? Is it:
- Running slow?
- Freezing randomly?
- Apps not opening or crashing?
- Internet not connecting?
3. Basic Fixes for Common Issues
Try these general steps before going deeper:
- Close unused tabs and apps.
- Check available storage space — free up at least 15% if possible.
- Update your operating system and drivers.
- Run a malware scan using Windows Defender or another reputable tool.
Tip: If you're not sure which drivers to update, start with display, Wi-Fi, and chipset drivers from your manufacturer’s site.
4. Run Built-In Troubleshooters
Windows has several tools to fix itself:
- Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters
- Try running troubleshooters for Internet, Bluetooth, Audio, etc.
5. Check for Recent Changes
Did the issue start after a new update, app install, or settings change?
- Try uninstalling recently added apps.
- Use System Restore (if enabled) to roll back to a previous working state.
6. Check Startup Impact
Too many programs launching at startup can bog down performance.
- Open Task Manager → Startup tab → Disable unnecessary apps
7. Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads only essential services. If the issue disappears here, the cause is likely a driver or third-party app.
- Press
Win + R
, type msconfig
, go to Boot tab → Safe Boot
- Or hold Shift while clicking “Restart” → Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings
8. Hardware Check
- Run Windows Memory Diagnostic (
mdsched.exe
) to check RAM
- Check hard drive health using
chkdsk
or tools like CrystalDiskInfo
9. When to Ask for Help
If you’ve tried all the above and still have issues, it might be time for a professional. Bring your notes — what you’ve tried will help techs solve the problem faster (and cheaper).
